Abstract

Non-obstetric anesthesia in pregnant women is a challenge for medical personnel due to the physiological changes produced in these patients and because not only the well-being of the mother but also the fetus must be taken into account. It is essential to know the physiological changes that occur, especially the cardiovascular ones. For the monitoring of fetal well-being, it is essential to differentiate those fetuses that are viable (less than 23 weeks) from those that are viable (23 weeks or more). Doppler ultrasound before and after surgery is performed on all patients, adding other tests if feasible, such as fetal heart rate.

Knowing teratogenic drugs is essential, in addition to being aware of the effects that the drugs we use on a day-to-day basis can produce. To highlight the effect of sevoflurane, since at a MAC of 0.5% it has a tocolytic effect.

Regarding anesthetic considerations, whenever possible, surgery should be delayed until the sixth week after delivery. Preventive use of tocolytics is not recommended and supine hypotension is an entity to be taken into account, recommending placing a bedpan on the patient's right side to help prevent it.

For the writing of this review article, a search of the available international literature published during the last ten years on the PubMed and Embase platforms has been carried out with the keywords: nonobstetric surgery, pregnancy anesthesia.
