Abstract

A key aspect in evaluating the hemodynamic status of the patient is the monitoring of cardiac output. Its determination offers an approximation to the global circulatory state, being one of the cardiovascular parameters standards  in the management of critically ill or high surgical risk patients.

Although the determination of cardiac output with a pulmonary artery catheter has fallen into disuse in the operating room and in the critical care management, it is important that the anesthesiologist-intensivist understands the biophysical bases of this monitoring.
