Abstract

The administration of morphine chloride by the neuraxial route has gained prominence as an analgesic modality both in the intraoperative and postoperative stages in recent years.Historically, its use had been very limited, if not outlawed, due to the possible appearance of serious side effects, including the dreaded respiratory depression.

With the use of increasingly lower doses of morphine and with the records of large cohorts of cases, it has been possible to establish doses with an optimal safety profile and analgesic efficacy in routine clinical practice. At the same time, a better understanding of the physiology and pharmacology of spinal morphine (as an opioid with hydrophilic characteristics) makes its use an interesting therapeutic tool in pain management both intraoperatively and postoperatively.

Based on these arguments, in our center we have used the administration of neuraxial morphine in different surgical procedures for more than a decade, observing good safety and analgesia profiles.

All this has motivated us to collect retrospective data to evaluate and show our results.
