Abstract

The postdural puncture headache is the most frequent complication after locoreginal anesthesia. The father of epidural anesthesia, August Bier, presented the first case of postdural puncture headache in 1899, attributing it to the loss of cerebrospinal fluid. Due to its high incidence in routine practice, knowledge of its diagnosis and treatment is esencial. The postdural puncture headache is a headache that gets worse when standing up and improves with lying down.

The intensity of pain and disability in basic activities of daily living determine the type of treatment. Treatment should always be individualized according to the clinical characteristics of each patient.

For the writing of this review article, a bibliographic search has been carried out on the PubMed, Elsevier and UpToDate platforms of the review articles and systematic reviews published during the last ten years, in Spanish and English, with the keywords: headache, puncture, dura and epidural. Other information ources used are the books indicated in the references section.
