Hereditary motor sensory neuropathy, also known as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, is one of the most common hereditary diseases in our country. It is really a spectrum of disorders casued by a specific mutation in one of several myelin genes that result in defects in myelin structure, maintenance, and formation.
In these patients, regional anesthesia has been controversial due to theoretical concerns that patients with this disease may have an increased susceptibility to further nerve damage with the use of local anesthetic agents. However, the available limited clinical data suggest otherwise.
