Abstract

Dexamethasone is frequently used in the perioperative setting, including prophylaxis against postoperative nausea and vomiting, reducing pressure in the airways, in cerebral edema, and may also be useful in the treatment of acute and chronic pain. It is a synthetic glucocorticoid, with minimal mineralocorticoid activity and with actions that resemble those of steroid hormones. It acts as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant. Its potency as an anti-inflammatory drug is 25-50 times that of hydrocortisone and up to 16 times that of prednisolone.
