Abstract

Cardiac output (CO) monitoring is a basic diagnostic and management tool in intensive care units (ICU). For this reason, guaranteeing the quality of SLN measurement procedures is a fundamental aspect of biomedical research and clinical practice.

For years, since its introduction in the 1970s, the pulmonary artery catheter (CAP) has been considered the gold standard for the intermittent measurement of CO by thermodilution.

In recent times we are witnessing a rapid implementation of echocardiography in ICUs. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) has been used to estimate SLN. The most commonly used form is based on the measurement of the area of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) that is multiplied by the velocity-time integral at this point (IVT LVOT).
