When we talk about intubation of the awake patient due to difficult airway predictors, the first thing we think and read in the different guidelines is the handling of the fiberscope, however, there are several reasons that limit its execution.
The fiberscope has a higher training curve than the video laryngoscope, in addition to its need for constant use to maintain optimal dexterity for its manipulation.
On the other hand, the cost for acquisition and maintenance of a fiberscope is much higher than that of the video laryngoscope, making it difficult to obtain in most hospitals.
Therefore, video laryngoscopes can be a solution to a predicted difficult airway in the awake patient.
Their use is spreading widely because they are easy to handle, inexpensive and versatile devices, allowing their use in a greater number and variety of patients, in addition to having a lower learning curve.
