Abstract

Although the initial stabilization maneuvers are the fundamental pillar in the treatment of the poisoned patient, extracorporeal therapies (ET) play a fundamental role in a subset of poisonings, to prevent or reverse serious toxicity. The present review aims to describe aspects related to the treatment of acute poisonings caused by the most frequent dialyzable substances; based on the pharmacological aspects of this type of toxin. A literature search was carried out in Pubmed and Medline with the following strategy: (Intoxication OR poisons OR overdose) AND (extracorporeal therapy OR extracorporeal treatment OR hemodialysis OR hemofiltration OR haemodialysis OR CRRT). The search for information was completed by reviewing the publications of the EXTRIP working group.
