non-invasive ventilation (NIV), Acute respiratory failure, EPOCAbstract
Acute respiratory failure (ARF) remains a common pathology in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). There will be multiple causes of ARF: decompensations of chronic respiratory pathologies, pulmonary contusions , post-operative surgery in a pulmonary resection, community/healthcare sepsis associated or an respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) associated with other extrapulmonary pathologies. The treatment of ARF depends of the origin. The mechanical ventilation is the necessary support to keep the patient oxygenated while the lung damage causing the damage heals. Respiratory support can range from simple oxygen therapy to orotracheal intubation and connection an invasive mechanical ventilation. Too, the through non-invasive ventilation (NIV) will be necesary in different modalities. It should also be noted that NIV can help prevent intubation or facilitate extubation of certain patients.
