A pesar de los importantes avances en la prevención, la parada cardíaca (PCR) continúa siendo una causa importante de mortalidad y morbilidad en muchos países del mundo. Existen una serie de acciones que, en su conjunto, se denominan "Cadena de Supervivencia" que han demostrado que, si se realizan correctamente, las posibilidades de supervivencia tras una PCR presenciada extrahospitalaria se aproximan al 50%.
