Abstract

Introduction

The suprascapular nerve block (SSNB) is an effective technique for the treatment of shoulder pain. The purpose of this study is to evaluate pain and functionality of the shoulder before and after a SSNB and to analyze what factors influence these changes.

Materials and methods

Prospective cohort study of patients treated with SSNB for chronic shoulder pain. We collected (1) factors related to the patients and pain, (2) pain (VAS at night, at rest and during activity) and functionality (QuickDASH), at baseline and one month after SSNB, and (3) evolution after SSNB. Statistical analysis using Student's T test, ANOVA and Pearson's coefficient was conducted.

Results

54 patients were recruited, 29 men (53.7%), with a mean age of 54.47 years (SD 9.82). The mean VAS before and after the SSNB with its significance was: nocturnal 5.42 (SD 2.15) / 2.56 (SD 2.29), p = 0.003; at rest 3.36 (SD 2.42) / 0.93 (SD 1.40), p = 0.096; during activity 6.34 (SD 9.48) / 2.94 (SD 1.97), p = 0.811; and QuickDASH 62.50 (SD 18.22) / 42.22 (SD 21.73), p < 0.001. Improvement in nocturnal VAS was related to the total number of SSNB (p = 0.033) and approached significance with the duration of pain (p = 0.062).

Conclusion

Night pain and shoulder function improve after SSNB. Improvement in nocturnal VAS is related to the number of SSNB performed and is influenced by the duration of the symptoms.
