Abstract

Open radical cystectomy is the gold standard for bladder carcinoma with muscle infiltration and involves, in addition to resection of the bladder and adjacent structures, the performance of a complementary procedure that allows urine collection, which increases the morbidity and mortality of the procedure. The most frequently used technique is the cutaneous uretero-ileostomy (Bricker). The traditional analgesic mainstay has been the thoracic epidural, very widely used nowadays. However, there is recent evidence showing a better postoperative course with other analgesic techniques and, therefore, routine epidural analgesia is not currently included in postoperative recovery protocols.
