Abstract

Patients aged 45 years or older undergoing non-cardiac surgery have a perioperative mortality of 1-2%, with the main cause of death being cardiovascular complications, including acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Classically, the increase in biomarkers such as high-sensitivity troponin (cTn) in the perioperative setting could have been ignored if this alteration was not associated with ischemic symptoms. Currently, a new entity known as "myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery" (MINS) is defined, which presents an increase in troponins as a biomarker of cardiac damage, but without symptoms or evidence of myocardial ischemia in an electrocardiogram (ECG). With this article, we intend to carry out a review of the published literature, trying to establish the way to differentiate both entities and how to manage them, concluding that the management of AMI is more established than the management of MINS.
